Q&A with Architectural Designer Paul Hopkinson

Paul is an experienced Architectural Designer and a key member of the Adamson’s team.

He joined Adamson’s in 1981 and his creativity, skill and experience have seen him create some stunning projects during this time.

How long have you been designing kitchens and bathrooms?

I’ve been a designer for 37 years now.

How has the role of a kitchen changed since you started designing?

The kitchen has become the social hub of the house, around which family life revolves. It’s not just a space to cook in, it’s a multi-functional living space at the heart of the home.

What role does the kitchen play in your own home?

Our kitchen is a social space. We spend a lot time here with friends and family. We also help teach the grandkids to cook, which we love.

Any predictions for future home innovations?

We’re already seeing it now, but I think even more so going forward everything in the kitchen will be linked to a smart phone or tablet. Using the kitchen will become a sleeker, quicker and more integrated experience. The power to control everything will be at your fingertips.

In your eyes, what makes a luxury kitchen or bathroom?

Luxury for me is about quality. In particular quality fittings, installations and superior design. It’s important to listen to exactly what the client wants so we create a space that defines luxury for them.

What do you think are the benefits of a bespoke kitchen or bathroom as opposed to a standard design?

Bespoke designs allow the designer to ensure that products, units and appliances fit exactly and work seamlessly as part of the whole space. It also gives me and the client total freedom to create a room that is individual, personal and unlike any other – a total reflection of the client.

How does colour impact the kitchen?

Colour can make or break a design. If you’re looking to future proof your kitchen, keep units and fixtures neutral, injecting colour with soft furnishings or painted walls which can easily be changed to create a new look. Colour can be fun and really make an impact in a room which is why we work with companies such as Beckermann and Masterclass who offer a wide variety of colours to suit every taste.

What’s the best advice you could give to a client looking to start renovations?

Take your time to think through what you’re looking for and what’s essential. Think through all your decisions carefully. Use a company that can project manage from start to finish as this takes a huge amount of stress out of a project. It also ensures that the work will run efficiently and within the expected time frame.

What do you love most about what you do?

Every day is different as a designer. Clients are all different and each design is different.

When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your time?

With my family, dining out and playing golf.
